Shannon Spence – Cartoonist

Howdy, I'm Shannon Spence! I'm a cartoonist, zinemaker, community organizer, and former medical technologist from Hampton, VA. I live with my husband and pittie mix (Tater Tot) in NYC.

I hold a strong belief in the power of comics to move and inspire, and I enjoy creating stories that bring joy and help me to process overwhelming emotions. I started as a woodcut printmaker and fell for comics hard. I love experimentation with unique zine formats, cheap and colorful tools, and new printing methods.

I founded the Comix Accountability Club in 2022. I also started an indie small press called CART Press in 2025 with my zine bestie Maddie Sackett.

Awards: Riso Inc. Artist of the Month (2025), Comics Advocacy Mini-Grant Recipient (2024), Broken Pencil Mag Zine Awards Finalist: Best Comic Zine (2022), Miller Arts Scholar (UVA, 2019).
